As we get used to the new BMW naming convention with the addition of the 2 and 4 Series.  BMW 2 Series convertible photo rendering reveal that the upcoming 2 Series convertible will retain the fabric roof from the outgoing 1 Series convertible, instead of following suit of its 4 Series sibling that currently sports a metal hardtop.

Convertible hardtops have become the standard in recent years, with special appeal to customers in rough weather areas. Making them considerably more livable all year around. However, as of now, soft tops have been revolutionized in terms of noise and wind insulation, making modern interiors considerably cozier than your grandpa’s classic convertible soft top.

The US market will enjoy the BMW 2 Series with many engine choices. A 228i powered by a 2.0 liter turbo 4 cylinder engine producing 240 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque, with the possibility of the debut of a 175hp turbocharged 1.5 liter 3 cylinder engine that will make its way into a 220i model. Additionally, a 235i variant powered by a 3.0 liter TwinPower turbo inline 6 cylinder producing 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque will also be offered. So far, there is no word on an M135i convertible version to be headed our way from Europe.
